CR800 serial to USB connection

Has anyone connected the CR800 to a cellular modem via a serial to USB connection?

The modem would have to be a USB host device, which is extremely unlikely.

We have connected a 800 to a modem by means of serial cable to serial port.  Why do you have to have USB?
