Issues connecting second-hand Garmin GPS16x-HSV to CR1000 datalogger

Zachary Jul 19, 2023 11:24 PM

Hey,

I was recently given a second-hand GPS16x-HSV to use with my CR1000 Datalogger to update the datalogger's time, date, and location. This GPS was originally purchased from Garmin therefore it does not have the configuration that Campbell does to them. It is also an older model (serial # - 1A4173675) so it still has the original 5v PPS signal. I am having some issues where the GPS coordinates are off by 20 miles, and the date is incorrect. The strange thing is that the time in UTC is perfectly accurate despite the incorrect date and location.

Here is what I have as my setup:

For the connection, I removed the ethernet port to gain access to the wires in the cable, connected the white and grey cable to a COM port, and the rest to ground as instructed by the ShortCut wiring diagram for my program. I have placed the antenna within line of sight of the sky, however, there are a few trees around the opening. My area can be prone to losing GPS signal, however, it seems the GPS is still able to connect to satellites (I found this out by looking into the terminal). I have attached the sniffer data to the end of this message.

To go more in-depth about the issues:

The location is within the same state as mine, but a few towns over. The date is constantly updated to 12/3/2003 instead of the current date. The time is completely correct in UTC.

If anyone knows how to fix this issue, or if I am doing something incorrectly, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
- Zachary

Here is a snippet of the sniffer data I got from the terminal:
